"Cold steels and firearms of XV-XIX century"
| |
|
The purpose of the given exhibition is to show the weapons of the 15th -19th centuries. The principle of chronology forms the basis for exhibiting.
The items on show form two major groups: cold arms and firearms. The cold arms are divided into staff weapons and blade arms.
The first group includes lances and pikes of various types in combination with other types of weapons (usually axes or hatches) Here you can also see striking arms.
The blade weapons include swords, court swords, broadswords, backswords, cavalry swords (sabers), knives and daggers.
In the 16th century the hunting weapons appeared, that is, the arms designed exclusively for hunting. These were first and foremost spears the construction of which depended on the game.
The design of short blade hunting arms was quite different from the design of military and festal weapons and the characteristic peculiarities were removed by the availability of hunting attributes.
The firearms are represented by different guns and pistols with various types of locks: matchlock, wheel-lock, flintlock and percussion lock. The majority of guns and pistols were muzzle-loaded, but the breech-loaded guns are also on display. In the second part of the 19th century apart from smooth-bore guns there appeared rifled guns which increased the efficiency of firearms and improved the shooting performance. These guns have acquired the name of rifles. First the rifles were single-loaded, but already in the second part of the 19th century there appeared repeating rifles (the so-called magazine rifles).
Apart from pistols the handguns are presented by different systems of revolvers.
