Department of Western Ukraine Lands History

The third floor of the Black House (Rynok Sq., 4) holds the exposition of the Department of Western Ukraine Lands in the 2nd half of the 19th – 20th centuries, opening of which took place in January 1995. In the exhibition halls of the Department the materials revealing history of our region in 1914 – 1941are represented.

Leitmotif of the exhibition is the struggle for realization of nation ideas in all areas of historical existence of Ukrainian people.

Many museum exhibits show the battle way of USS (Ukrainian Sich Riflemen) Legion - Ukrainian military formation during the World War II.

Photos and documents, weapons of riflemen, pictures of O. Kurylas and L. Medvid enlarge emotional perception of contemporary events.

A significant place in the museum exhibition is devoted to the exhibits related to the events of the national liberation revolution in Ukraine during 1917 - 1921 (examples of contemporary weapons, reconstructions of military uniforms of UGA and UNR Army, battle tachanka, documents and banknotes of UNR).

Separate expositional complexes reflect socio-political processes that took place in 20-30s of the last century on these territories. Among them there are: documents of political parties and associations, honors of the associations “Prosvita” and “Ridna Shkola”, rare books, sheets music of works of famous Ukrainian composers, theater clothing of Ukrainian stage luminaries, and examples of Lviv enterprises products.

The exhibition represents museum exhibits reflecting tragic events of 1939 - 1941 in western Ukraine: weapons of German and Poland war, photographs and documents that are the evidences of repressive policy of the Bolshevik regime. The basis of the exhibition art design is the idea of reflecting the streets of Lviv making the showcases look like old Lviv gates and the podiums – like city cobblestones.

Exposition exhibits help the visitors not only to understand the historical processes that took place at Western Ukrainian lands during the interwar period, but also to value national and liberation movement on the other territory of Ukraine from the point of view of Lviv.
