Silver at Museum Collection

The collection consists of the items made entirely of silver (about 600 units) and the objects made of silver and precious materials (over 100 units).

The oldest according to the time of its origin is a group of archaeological silver, including jewelry from the Middle Ages, the 11th – 14th centuries that conventionally forms a separate part of the whole collection. It is mostly rings, bracelets, earrings, temporal rings, diadems and more. All together it is about 160 units.

Most of the silver collection objects are dated back to the end of the 16th – the beginning of the 20th century; some exhibits are from the mid-20th century. The products of the modern goldsmiths are very rarely represented in the collection.

Geography of the origin of museum silver exhibits is closely related to the history of our region. The items of the collection were manufactured mostly in those countries with which Galicia is connected by common historical destiny or close trade and cultural copulas. These are - Poland, Austria, Czech Republic, Russia, and Germany.

Unfortunately, taking into consideration the collection history peculiarities, the products of the Ukrainian jewelers takes rather a modest place there. An exception is a collection of Middle Ages jewelry, produced mostly by the masters of Galicia-Volhynian Principality.

The collection also represents the products of Polish, Armenian and Jewish artists who worked in Galicia, Lviv in particular.
Most collection exhibits have secular character. Religious items form comparatively small part of the total amount.

Separate works of the famous European artists and companies, which are stored at Lviv Historical Museum, could be of great honor to any museum collection.

The value of this collection is defined by the fact that it contains the exhibits which history of existence is organically connected with the history of our region and is often associated with important events and outstanding personalities. Collection items describe the way of life of the Galicia certain part of people and show the aesthetic tastes of their owners, the history of the collection formation, it is to some extent a reflection of the history development of collecting and patronage in our region.
