"Lviv in graphic arts"
| |
|
The city of Lviv is unique, it was modeled and sculpted by history for seven and a half centuries. It was fortunate that the city lay on the crossroads of trade routes and therefore became one of European trading centers, which created favorable conditions for its development and prosperity.
Although repeated fires and enemy attacks ruined its built-up areas and the monuments of material and spiritual culture, the city was rebuilt and continued to develop.
The process of the city development and conversion, changes in its particular parts, streets and architecture can be observed at the presented exhibition which totals approximately one hundred graphic works of art of XVII-middle XX century. Among them there are the drawings by Alfred Kamenobrodskyi, Yanush Vesolovskyi, Alexander Tits, Karol Vavrosh, Mykhailo Sozanskyi.
The oldest exhibit is the copper-plate engraving showing the view of Lviv in early XVII century and made probably from the drawing by an Italian - Aurelio Passarotti. This earliest view of Lviv that has been preserved to the modern times was placed in the book "Civitates orbis ten-arum" which was published in Keln in 1618.
From the detailed copper-plate engraving by navigational engineer Fransoir Pernerone one can see how the city of Lviv looked in the first years of Austrian occupation when it was proclaimed the capital of Galician and Lodomeria Kingdom.
A considerable part of the exhibition is taken by the works in lithography made by the Filler studio, which presents such authors as Karol Auer, Anton Lange, Joseph Svoboda Bogum Stenchynskyi. (late XVIII-XIX centuries).
The graphics of the XX century is firstly the works by Lviv artists Olena Kultchitska, Leopold Levytskyi, Stephania Gebus-Baranetska, Josegha Kratokhvylia-Vidymska, Margaryta Starovoyt, Yaroslava Musyka, Anna Davydovych.
The exhibition presents a rare opportunity to compare the skill and mastery of old artists with the works by the artists of our times. It is interesting to see the buildings and monuments which no longer exist and also those which suffered a considerable
